President Rafael Reif invites all faculty, staff, and students to a
Community Picnic, Friday, May 6, on Hockfield Court.

There will be sandwiches, sweets, music – and time to relax and reconnect with friends, colleagues, students and teachers. 

Featured guests will be: Cynthia Barnhart SM ’86, PhD ’88, provost, who served as MIT’s chancellor from 2014 to 2021, and Martin Schmidt SM ’83, PhD ’88, provost from 2014 to 2022, who will be the next president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Cindy and Marty will each have their own “greeting corner,” where you can stop by to say hello and wish them well on their new adventures.

Acclaimed finance expert Robert C. Merton PhD ’70 has been named the recipient of MIT’s 2021-2022 James R. Killian Jr. Faculty Achievement Award, the highest honor the Institute faculty can confer upon one of its members.

The Killian Award citation hails Merton, the School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management, as “one of the founding architects of modern finance theory,” whose work has “become an integral part of the global financial system.”
